Abstract:

Professional studio portraits pertaining to a Japanese American family, unidentified except for son "Eddy". 1: Group portrait of family (mother, father, son); 2: portrait of son in U.S. Army uniform (4 copies, 1 inscribed "For Ich, Buddy, Ed"); 3: portrait of mother (2 copies); 4: wedding portrait of couple (inscribed "To Eddy, Love, Shig & Nancy Komatsubara"); 5. group portrait at Japanese American funeral taken before Ivy Chapel at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles, depicting mourners posing with wreaths and coffin draped in American flag; Japanese caption printed in negative. It is unclear how the funeral portrait relates to the other portrait subjects.

Tōyō Miyatake was born in Japan in 1895; came to Los Angeles in 1909; studied with Harry K. Shigeta and Edward Weston; established a successful photography business in Los Angeles's Little Tokyo district; during World War II internment of Japanese Americans, documented daily life at the Manzanar concentration camp and other relocation areas; continued professional career after the war until retirement in 1960; died 1979. The Little Tokyo street Toyo Miyatake Way was named after him.
